Coconut Creek is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, Coconut Creek had a population of 11,034. The name "Coconut Creek" derives from its location on the Tamiami Trail and mouth of the creek where sugarcane was grown. The first European to visit Coconut Creek was Capt. James Cook in 1779 while exploring Florida's Gulf Coast region for Spain. He sailed past it on his way to Biscayne Bay. In 1821, Captain John Smith discovered this area when he charted the region as part of his trip from Pensacola to Key West. At that time, Indian traders and fishermen were responsible for much of the commerce along this stretch of coast. By 1826-27, Spanish missionaries had established a mission at present-day Coral Gables; however, their presence only increased trade and development along this section of the coast until after American independence in 1813 with Tampa becoming an independent republic under Ulysses S. Grant became an obstacle to importation by Spanish settlers who desired land east of Tampa Bay on which they could establish plantations; as result, many Cuban refugees fled southward during this period seeking new opportunities in what would become known as "the Great Migration."
