Coconut Creek is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sunnyvale, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. Coconut Creek is located on State Road 541, about 15 miles (24 km) north of Orlando and about 20 miles (32 km) east of Kissimmee. The first Europeans to visit Coconut Creek were Spanish missionaries in the early 18th century. In 1795 Father José de la Torre y Costilla founded a mission in what is now Coconut Creek after traveling from Havana, Cuba. The mission was dedicated to St. John Bosco and opened in 1796 with 40 Catholic priests and nuns living among Native Americans who were then known as the Timucua Nation. Coconut Creek became a separate town on December 12, 1907 when it was annexed by Sanford after its incorporation as a municipality that year under Florida's land act 693. In 1916 two hurricanes caused extensive damage to the town center including much of the Missionary School which still stands today complete with its original layout and furnishings including an old bellows room used for drying clothes during Hurricane Andrew’s 1992 strike against power plants in Seminole County which destroyed most of Sanford’s downtown area also causing significant damage). The post office operated until 1974; however local residents continued to send mail directly to their homes until USPS moved out of town effective February 1st 1977.; however some services such as delivery were continued through various Grandma's Pizza locations until May 25th 2007 when all operations stopped due to financial difficulties brought on by Katrina aftermath; however many personal items such as pictures and mementos will remain unprocessed here at our store until they are finally stored or auctioned off coconut creek has had quite a bit of history going back before it even made it into modern day times! This gave us another clue because if you go down there now you can see evidence that someone actually drove up right next door 100 years ago just like Captain Cook did- his shipwreck remains visible offshore! So whether you believe us or not but wherever your looking there must be something referencing saint john boscoexisting somewheres around here somewhere…right? RIGHT!?
Coconut Creek was founded in 1871 by James A. Cook as a citrus plantation in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. The name is derived from the Seminole word "koo-tiki" meaning "fruit of the coconut tree." In 1912, Coconut Creek was annexed by Hillsborough County and became part of the city of Tampa. In 1963, it was combined with neighboring Clearwater to form the new city of Sunrise. It reverted to its original name in 1984 when it joined with Hillsborough County to become Pinellas County.
