The townsite that now makes up Coconut Creek consisted of several parcels of land that had been bought or leased by various people over time. One such parcel was owned by Elias Pompa who settled there in 1868. Pompa built a cabin on what is now Main Street in Coconut Creek and named it "Enoch Key". He also developed some acreage around what is now Center Court and began growing coconuts. A few years later he sold some land to James Kapp, who also started growing coconuts there. In 1902, Kapp renamed his new plantation "Kapp's Grove" after himself and added additional acres to it including what are now Hillcrest Drive and Northwest Boulevard. By 1909 all but one acre had been acquired by Edwin Withers when he purchased Kapp's Grove from James Kapp for $2 million dollars USD$. At this point coconut production moved from Slatkin's Grove to Withers' property where workers lived, processed coconuts into oil cakes or creams and exported them to other parts of America via railroads then steamships back to port in Jacksonville – an expensive process that took many months during high season due to bad weather conditions at sea! In 1911 Withers merged his plantations with those of fellow Floridian Jethro Gibbs & Brothers which made him one of the largest landowners in South Florida; together they controlled more than 100 acres (39 ha) of virgin pine-needle forest along with holdings in Titusville (now part of Boynton Beach), Boca Raton (now part ofPalm Beach), Weston Park (now part of West Palm Beach), Okeechobee (now partOf Jupiter), Coral Gables (then unincorporated territory), Hollywood Hills (then unincorporated territory) and Sunrise Heights(later unincorporated territory). With this extensive landholdings Withers became oneof South Floridas most powerful men – he could do whatever he wanted with his properties without fear of retribution from either political leaders or business associates who still looked down upon him as little more than a lowly Samoan immigrant! He died suddenly aged only 60 years old on December 3rd, 1932 just four days after being elected Mayor Of Coconut Creek! His widow continued running her businesses until her death in 1984; their son John C.(1925-) currently owns/operates HCS Broadcasting Corporation which includes WWVZ-TV Channel 11 out OF Ft Lauderdale/Fort Lauderdale International Airport which provides local news coverage across several genres including stunting hurricane Irma Coverage .
