Coconut Creek is situated on the southern shore of the St. Johns River and is east of Orlando. The town was founded in 1892 by two Americans, John P. Sullivan and his brother-in-law George Hilliard, as a summer resort for wealthy white people looking for a place to escape from city life. Coconut Creek's history began with the development of its beachfront property by Captain James Cook in 1892 as part of his attempt to find new shipping routes between Australia and America. After being abandoned for several years, Captain Cook leased his land back to John P. Sullivan in 1896 and constructed a wharf on it which became known as Coconut Creek Beach Park today. In 1899, Governor Richard Witherspoon commissioned Arthur Ashe to develop Coconut Creek into an American Fern Grove Resort that would house both golf courses and other recreational activities such as swimming, tennis, boat rides and fishing excursions. The first major development occurred during World War I when many thousands of soldiers were stationed here while war efforts were conducted elsewhere in America; demand for access to this secluded community led to its growth even more during the wartime period. By 1926 Coconut Creek had reached its peak with 1,500 residents and 50 businesses including six hotels/motels operated by various hotel chains including Colonial Trust (now Marriott), Harrah’s Casino (now Hilton Hotels), Best Western Inn & Suites (now Wyndham Garden) and Embassy Suites (now JW Marriott). During the 1930s local officials developed plans to create what is now known as Harbour Drive within present day Coconut Creek Boulevard but these plans never came to fruition due to World War II shortages of land along Tampa Bay Shoreline Road which ran through downtown Tampa at that time; instead Harbour Drive was built adjacent to modern day Bay Street which now forms part of Interstate 495 northbound lanes between West Palm Beach - just south of where Harbour Drive used to be -and Sunrise Boulevard - approximately one mile east from where it currently meets Park Blvd., just north of downtown Miami After 1945 many families who had fled post-war Germany moved into what is now Coral Gables positioned along Gulfport Avenue immediately south of Holmwood Plantation; they brought their own styleof living characterized by large homes surrounded by lush gardens with spindles running throughout them typical features found only within wealthier areas such as Beverly Hills or Rochelle Manor in Los Angeles County California'.
