In 1836 James A. Haley explored this area for prospectors seeking oil wells in what would become Broward County. By 1839 Coconut Creek had about 100 residents and two stores: one operated by Abram Tarrant and his brother George Tarrant Sr., and another by Isaac Backus. At that time there was no water available for farming or ranching so settlement depended on hunting and fishing resources that continued to be developed until well into the 21st century In 1903 The Pembroke Incorporated company organized coconut groves along Biscayne Boulevard near University Park Drive between SW 152nd Street Avenue (now US-1)and SW 154th Street Avenue (now SR 14). That year owner Edward Wistar leased land east of Biscayne Boulevard from millionaire banker Samuel Gompers for development into a citrus grower's paradise known as "The Palm Beach Estates." Gompers left instructions that all trees should bear at least five fruit per acre; each tree should have at least 20 fruits per acre when grown uniformally throughout its height It was not until 1915 when developer Payne Brothers bought Gompers' leasehold interest in "The Palm Beach Estates" which became known as "Coconut Grove". Thereafter developers razed old citrus trees and began felling new ones to build homes In 1916 Payne brothers built a two story red brick building on what is now NW 101st Street between NW 15th Street & NW 16th Streets which served as their principal office . All dwellings were single family homes with private gardens . From 1917 until 1943 Coral Gables , then called Brevard County Racetrack Village occupied most of this site . during World War II military housing was built adjacent to US-1 just north of Coconut Grove Cemetery off Northwest 104th Avenue The post office moved from Coral Gables to Coconut Grove circa 1945 thru 1952
