Coconut Creek is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 18,693 at the 2010 census. Coconut Creek is part of the Miami metropolitan area. It is bordered by Kendallville to the east and west, Doral to the north, Biscayne Boulevard to the south and Coral Gables to the southwest. The first inhabitants of Coconut Creek were Seminole Indians who came from South Georgia in 1665. The community was named for a small island near Cuba that lay between Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers on which some sugarcane growers had built their homes. A group of British marines stationed at Key West called Coconut Creek "a charming place" because it was free from mosquitoes and other diseases carried by Spanish settlers in Cuba. In 1868, Atlantic Steam Navigation Company's steamship "Atlantis" ran into trouble off Key Largo Beach after hitting a reef with her bowsprit when using ebb tide for docking purposes; 11 men lost their lives as a result of the accident. That year, Cuban refugees began arriving in Tampa Bay due to AmericanRevolutionary War hostilities led by Fidel Castro against Spain In 1865 Keyserling Brothers started growing sugar cane on what is now known as Oldfield Place while others plantations were established around mile marker 14 on State Road 98 (now Interstate 4) including: Pimentel & Sons (1866–69), Borden Bros (1870–72), Myrick Bros (1872), Harkins & Jarvis (1875), Jasson Brothers (1878). By 1870 all this land had been sold with only about 6 acres still undeveloped within present day Coconut Creek village boundaries. When Key Largo became an incorporated municipality on May 20th 1870 under charter number 910 it annexed all unincorporated areas lying east or west of US 1/B 95th St., being then bounded by US 1/B 95th St., Oldfield Place Rd.,Key Largo Beach Blvd., NW 2nd Ave., SE 3rd Ave., SW 2nd Dr., and easterly limit Addition NO 5 – now Arthur Ashe Drive therefore making Coconut Creek an independent political entity . One reason why there was no development until this time may have been due to lack of money available from landowners or transportation difficulties caused by US 1/B 95th St.-the most direct route linking Tampa with Havana-neither providing easy access nor good crossing points for goods reaching Havana during those days
Coconut Creek was founded in 1837 by John F. Kennedy, the son of President James K. Polk. It is one of the oldest towns in Florida and has a rich history dating back to its early days as a Spanish land grant. Coconut Creek became an English colony in 1665, and was known for its rich sugarcane crop. The town's nickname, "The Lost Colony", refers to its location on the banks of the Stono River, which separated it from what is now Jacksonville, Florida. After being abandoned by settlers in the 17th century, Coconut Creek grew into a thriving community with many plantations and businesses. In 1837, JFK purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land at Coconut Creek Necklace from Captain Josef Martinez de la Vega and began building his home there. The town would continue to grow rapidly after he sold it off over the next few years until it had over 20 homes and businesses by 1860. In 1868, JFK married Maria Shriver and moved to Palm Beach County with her; he would later become governor of Florida. The town continued to grow rapidly during his time as governor; by 1880 Coconut Creek had over 100 homes and businesses and was considered one of Florida's most prominent communities. By 1920, however, Castroville – which was located adjacent to present-day Coral Gables – displaced Coconut Creek as the largest town in Palm Beach County
