Cocoa is one of only a few American towns that still has original buildings from 1837 when it was founded as a military post by Major General Andrew Jackson and Dr. George Washington Smith. The first settlers in Cocoa were Baptist missionaries who arrived in 1800. In 1837, Major General Andrew Jackson established Cocoa as a military post to provide soldiers for the Seminole Wars. The town grew rapidly with cotton plantations being developed and new homes being built until the early 1900s when World War I began to impact America's economy and production prices for cotton changed which caused many Delta farmers to move their operations out of state or into adjacent states such as Florida where wages were lower than back east costings. This forced many investors to sell their holdings in Cocoa which lead to its decline over time until it closed its doors for good in 1984 after experiencing dwindling population, loss of jobs, falling values of local currency and an increase in crime rates). The last resident died on July 20th 1984 after living most of her life hereabouts; Mrs Sarah Ladd (born October 15th 1893) had been Honorary Citizen since 1974 and Peaceful Residence Mayor since 1978 - both terms terminated by City Council upon her death effective August 3rd 1984 (the date per se fixed by ordinance ordaining Funeral Service)... After World War II ended, there was a renewed interest in firearms because of the increasing number of firearms being produced worldwide. This led to another invention by Nicholas-Jacques Conte called the modern automatic pistol which fires rounds without having any manual firing process like rifles did before them

After the war, Cocoa returned to its pre-war status as a key citrus production center.
