Many black families moved into the town from nearby Jacksonville during this time period. As sugar prices plummeted after the American Civil War ended, businesses started closing down and people lost their jobs. This led to a large population decline and significant poverty within Cocoa over the years- something that still exists today despite recent progress made by the city government. Cocoa was incorporated as a city on May 10, 1907 following months of effort by Mayor J C Madden and City Councilwoman Mabelle Goode Dawson. The city’s charter stated that it would be “a municipally chartered town corporation with powers exclusive unto itself…to provide all manner of public services including but not limited thereto: Light Streets; Parks; Highways; Sewers; Water Supply” In 1912, Cocoagua annexed Brushy Creek Settlement which had been located east of present day Cocoa Village on what is now Brushy Creek Boulevard West (formerly US 1). This annexation created commuter communities around nearby shopping centers like Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando which continue today as areas known as Citrus Heights (west side), Dania Beach (east side), or Daytona Beach (north side). In 1952, Coca Cola established its first bottling plant outside of Europe in Plantation Key on Biscayne Bayou near Miami Beach while continuing production inside North America at its existing plants in Monterrey Mexico City Mexico and Winston Salem North Carolina USA (& Refrigerated Bottling plant built therein 1954) . Other major bottlers during this time include PepsiCo., Frito Lay & Purina PetCare Center
Cocoa, Florida was founded in 1837 by James K. Polk and his brother John F. Knox, who named it for the cocoa trees that grew there. The Polk brothers were part of the first group of Americans to settle in what is now Monroe County, Florida, and they began trading with Native Americans and selling goods from their plantation businesses. In 1840, they sold their land to Anglo-Americans and founded a town called Gainesville. The town changed its name to Cocoa in 1847 after becoming the first county seat of Monroe County. The first post office was established in Cocoa in 1848. After being hit hard by the Panic of 1857, Cocoa became a boomtown during the late 1800s with new development coming up aroundthe corner at Stonington Avenue and US Highway 452. Between 1907 and 1914, Cocoa experienced an influx of Irish immigrants who ran a cotton mill on SW Third Street until it closed due to competition from other mills in Tampa Bay.
