In 1821, Anna Matson married John Hogg and they moved to what is now Cocoa. They were among the first white people to settle in this area and built their home on land that later became State Road 441. Anna Matson operated a grocery store there for many years before her death in 1907. John Hogg served as Mayor of Cocoa from 1915-1918 and 1925-1928; he also served as Lee County Treasurer from 1893-1900. He was born in Scotland in 1815 and died in 1924. In 1919, Anna Matson's son, George Waugh Matson, came to live with his aunt Lillian Hogg Whitehead (née Moody) at 5200 S Orange Blossom Trail which he named after his mother's maternal grandmother Emma Moody Whitehead who had been born there about 1830 Today Cocoa has a shopping center complete with large department stores such as Sears and Macy's as well as smaller businesses like JCPenney and Lord & Taylor which have made it an attractive place to live, work or visit since its inception over 100 years ago The town square contains one memorial stone commemorating both Anna Matson’s early life hereabouts – erected by her grandson George Waugh Matson – as well as three other local pioneers: pioneer teacher Elijah Burt (baptized January 3rd 1797), postmaster Hiram Bolden (baptized December 12th 1800) and physician Samuel Morse (baptized October 2nd 1822).
