Cocoa, Florida was founded on December 15, 1875 by Captain John A. Stroud and his family. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Veracruz in 1565. The area that is now Cocoa was part of the Fort Myers Indian Reservation until it was sold to Englishman James K. Polk in 1845 as part of the Adams-Onís Treaty. In 1865, the Polk administration transferred ownership of Fort Myers to Jacksonville for development into a military post and town known as Jacksonville Landing. From 1868-1874, Jacksonville Landing served as the capital of Florida before becoming Gainesville with its original courthouse coming online in 1874.
