Cocoa, Florida is a small city in Marion County, Florida. It is the most populous community in the county and has a population of 482 as of 2010. In 1837, John Thornton built a plantation on what is now State Road 211 east of present-day Cocoa. In 1892, Jacksonville Railroad came through town and began to lay track southward from Jacksonville for Gainesville & Fort Myers (later American Railway). On December 13th., 1892, Jacksonville Railroad donated land to build a depot at what is now State Road 211 and called it Thornton Station. In 1898, when Gainesville & Fort Myers merged into Jacksonville Railroad Company they changed the name to Jacksonville Terminal Company Limited and continued laying track southward until their line was abandoned in 1922 when they merged into First Railroads Corporation which then became part of Amtrak During World War I there were several factories built here including: JB Hunt Glass Works (1915), Goodyear Tire and Rubber Plant (1916), Bendix Aircraft Engine Plant (1921) and General Electric plant near downtown (1926). After World War II many companies relocated away from Cocoa because of Korean War production shortages but some continue operations today including: Lockheed Martin Missile Systems Inc., Waffle House Pizza Parlor LLC., Brown Brothers Harriman Grain Elevator Co., Alliant Techsystems Incorporated

Cocoa, Florida history began with the arrival of Spanish settlers in the area in the early 18th century. The first permanent European settler in Cocoa was Alonso de la Cueva, who arrived on February 6, 1764. La Cueva and his family were part of a group of eleven Spanish colonists that included Francisco Pacheco and Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. The first Christian church in Cocoa was built in 1775 by Father José Montero. In 1810, a school was established for girls by Rev. Antonio Salinas. The first store opened in Cocoa on May 10, 1812 by Capt. José Montoya y Escobar. By 1840, there were twenty-one stores in Cocoa with a population of about two hundred people. In 1865, Juana Dominguez organized a Ladies' Benevolent Society to promote education and provide assistance to needy families. That same year saw the establishment of the First Baptist Church which served as the town's center until it burned down in 1892. In 1895-96, construction began on the present day courthouse which was completed in 1902 after years of work by local volunteers and citizens alike. A fire destroyed most of downtown Cocoa on July 4, 1903; however, due to community collaboration and fundraising efforts much reconstruction took place including new streets and buildings that still stand today as part of downtown Cocoa’s fabric
