Cocoa, Florida was founded on December 12, 1838 by Captain John S. Cook as a small outpost on the coast of Cuba. In 1861, after Confederate soldiers burned several Union forts in Jacksonville, Governor James K. Polk ordered General Hernando de Soto to retake Pensacola from Spanish control. De Soto's expedition found Cocoa harbor blockaded by Spanish forces so he decided to establish a new settlement here instead. After months of effort ashore and along the river bank, De Soto's colony was established on December 12th 1868 as Cocoa P racific Station with a population of about 100 people: slaves and free blacks (about 60% white). With its strategic location near Pensacola Bayou and access to rice fields that grew in nearby Hillsborough County, Cocoa quickly became a major center of cotton production in south-central Florida during the 19th century. The town’s growth led to some difficulties; for example, early residents were accused of stealing goods from other towns through trade with Native Americans living nearby. In 1893-1894 an intense series of violent explosions rocked Coconut Creek when rebel munitions contractors detonated detonators concealed inside barrels filled with powder destined for Confederate cannons at Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay Bridge
In 1839, the United States bought what is now Cocoa, Florida from Spain. The area was part of the Spanish colony of Florida and in 1821, the United States acquired it from Spain for $14 million. In 1840, when Orange County was created, Cocoa was added to it.
