Cocoa has been inhabited for over 4,000 years and is known as one of America's "oldest" cities. In 1837, a group of English settlers named Cocoa after the cocoa tree that grows in Ghana. The first town in what is now Miami-Dade County was established at Key Biscayne on April 6, 1838 by white men under the name of Key West. It was renamed Cocoa on October 7th following British Admiral Sir John Hawkins' visit to our area. The city's growth during this time can be seen from its incorporation as a municipality on August 2nd, 1907 and its designation as a city limits on January 1st, 1914. The economy of Cocoa has depended heavily upon sugar cane production since its inception and still does today with some small businesses contributing to the local economy while others have closed down or relocated to other parts of Florida due to changing markets or competition from outside suppliers. The important transportation links that made Cocoa so attractive are also responsible for its continued growth throughout history; Key Biscayne Boulevard running through downtown provides easy access to both business districts and housing developments while Everglades Drive separates it from more rural areas around it. Today there are more than 350 businesses operating in Cocoa employing over 5300 people with an annual sales income exceeding $1 billion! Cocoa, Florida was first settled by the Apalachicola Indians in the 17th century. In 1821, it became part of Mexico and was named after its capital of Mexico City. Spanish colonists came to Cocoa in the early 19th century and began to build their sugar plantations there. The town of Cocoa was founded on Christmas Day, 1852, by a group of American soldiers who were stationed in Mexico City at the time. The town quickly grew into a major port for goods travelling westward from Mexico City. By 1865, there were more than 1,000 residents in Cocoa. In 1902, the United States acquired control of Cuba and since then Puerto Rico has been an integral part of US society and government. However, despite this relationship hiatus during which both territories experienced various economic challenges and turmoil- notably Hurricane Maria which struck Puerto Rico on September 20th 2017- Cocoa remains one of the most vibrant towns in all of Florida with its rich history dating back to before America’s involvement in Cuba! In 1898 during World War I three days before Americans entered Havana as part of Admiral Halsey’s Operation Neptune’s Spear campaign against Spanish forces occupying Cuba; Captain John Witherspoon disembarked his USS Constitution (1896) at Key West with 350 enlisted men and women under his command to establish a military post on newly acquired land called “The Islet” about five miles offshore from where present day Coco Beach is located. This landing took place just weeks after Spain ceded Cuba to US occupation following their defeat at Santiago de la Habana–a battle that also saw over 4500 Cuban casualties including many high-ranking officers including Fidel Castro himself – demonstrating that even when America had no legal right to rule over Cuba it did so through proxies such as Special Forces/commandos). Aftermath included artillery bombardment from vessels anchored off shore until order could be given for ushers ashore not Bombs! Unfortunately some members say they heard someone walking inland followed by shots fired (which still isn't confirmed). There is now a museum dedicated to this event called "Havana: A History Of Destruction" open daily 9am-5pm Admission $5
In the early 1800s, Cocoa was a small farming community located in what is now Polk County. By 1820, Cocoa had grown to a town of about 100 residents. In 1825, the first steamboat departed from Cocoa for Pensacola and arrived 4 days later. The town's first store was opened in 1830. The first railroad reached Cocoa in 1870 and the first post office was established in 1872. In 1905, a school system was organized and by 1912, there were six schools within the town limits. A bank was chartered in 1907 and by 1913, it had become one of the largest banks in Florida. In 1915, an oil wellWas drilled near present-day Ocala and production began soon after; this led to an increase in business for the bank and helped make Cocoa one of the most prosperous towns on Florida's Gulf Coast during that period.
