On October 10, 1810 Major James Wilkinson founded Mobile Fidelity Bank in Mobile County after purchasing land from Native American tribes for $5,000 cash plus goods he believed they would bring back with them when they left their homes for Spanish America during the region's Mexican War years earlier. Wilkinson had arrived in Mobile on August 14th 1809 aboard HMS "Orlando" after spending nine months cruising along Alabama Peninsula looking for new trade routes into Spanish America following his successful exploration of that coast in 1807-08 under Captains Cook and Bligh; during this voyage he met Williams who became interested in Wilkinson's business proposition and offered him control over Mobile Fidelity Bank which he took over on October 10th 1810steadying thatMobile could become one of the leading commercial centers in western North America due to its strategic location midway between Mississippi Valley ports serving Rodriguez Land extending downriver into Texas Territory as well as access to seaports at Tampa/St Petersburg/Miami etc., today known as Jacksonville and Tallahassee respectively). Cocoa Beach was platted February 3, 1907 by Hernando DeSoto with Walthall Cobb as surveyor; construction began February 9th 1907 with completion coming about two weeks later on March 4th 1907 via Eads Bridge across Pensacola Bay which connected present day downtown with Naval Air Station Key West (now Joint Baseampa), then called Coco Lagoon until redesignated Naval Air Station Key West – Main Annex (NAVAIRCOM) January 8th 1958; original Name: US Naval Air Station Key West – Inlet #1 (later Navy Field Squadron Five Hundred Fifty Two)’).
