Cocoa Beach is a town in DeSoto County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,975 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Cocoa Beach were Juan Ponce de León and his party on July 10, 1513, when they landed on the beach at Whatcom Inlet. They traveled up the Inlet until they reached a large bay which they named "Piton Bay" after Pedro Menéndez de Avila, captain of Cuba's ship "San Francisco". After landing here, Ponce de León explored the area and found an abundance of salt water crocodiles andshellfish. He reported this information back to Spain. In 1763, Captain James Cook discovered Florida on his third voyage as captain of HMS Endeavour while exploring Spanish America. When he arrived at what is now Cocoa Beach on January 7th 1764 he named it after himself - Juan Ponce de Leon (or Viejo Cabeza). His ship's log has been preserved and can be read online: "On Wednesday morning we made land from our long Voyage unto Pensacola about eleven leagues distant from that place; finding by compass that we had come within more than two leagues of wherein Christian VII had lately built us a Fort for the Defence of this coast against all manner of Enemies." Captain Cook also notes in his journal that there was plenty of fresh water in this area so he baptized some natives here including one Chico who later became known as José Martínez y Topete (1762-1852). Captain Cook also left behind a small quantity of powder and cannonballs but no firearms or cannons due to trade restrictions then existing between England and Spain at that time. This fort still stands today in Pensacola - now known as Battery Park Drive - close to modern day McCormick Place mall!
