Cocoa Beach is a small town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. Cocoa Beach has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years. In 1835, the first white settlers arrived in what is now Cocoa Beach and founded a trading post. After several years of growth, the Post Office closed in 1851 because of financial difficulties. A new Post Office was built on State Road 21A in 1855 and remained open until 1917 when it was replaced by the current building on US 1st Street. In 1868, cocoanuts were discovered in this area and began to be shipped from Thailand to market as far away as New York City. When Prohibition began in 1920, many businesses located along US 1st Street stopped doing business because they could not sell liquor without a license. However, some restaurants did remain open despite prohibition while others relapsed into alcohol-based commerce after repeal. The first gun shop in Cocoa Beach opened its doors on Main Street in 1922 with Sam Basso as the store's proprietor. This shop became one of the most well known firearms retailers in Florida due to its wide selection of rifles and shotguns as well as its ability toexport guns directly to countries such as Argentina and Uruguay within weeks of purchase

For a time, Cocoa Beach became one of Florida's largest naval bases with more than 100 Naval aircraft Carrier Squadron buildings erected during the war years alone. After the war ended, many local businesses closed down but Cocoa Beach slowly regained its economic stability until the early 1990s when oil exploration began to take hold in nearby Mobile County and tourism took over as mainstay of the town's economy once again
