When settlers arrived, they built homes on high ground near present-day Clearwater Creek and Clearwater River. They named their community after President James K. Polk's brother Andrew Polk. The early residents were farmers who grew crops such as corn, wheat, oats, peas, potatoes and cotton. They also raised horses and cows for milk and meat. In 1851, the first store was opened in Clermont when Ayer & Beardsley bought land from Jeptha Blythe for $5 per acre. By 1870, there were six stores and forty-eight businesses operating in Clermont with a population of 1,600 people! The growth of industry led to an increase in crime rates which made life difficult for everyday citizens. In 1881, local officials organized a militia to fight against lawlessness within the town limits! However, this effort failed due to lack of support from other parts of town. In 1898Clarmont voters passed a resolution declaring themselves an independent city! This action helped spur economic development within the city which led to more jobs opportunities for locals as well as investment by outside interests which helped improve infrastructure including streetlights and sewers! In 1924Fulton County repealed its prohibition laws which had been imposed during Reconstruction Era policies designed to help African Americans become successfulchers! This event signaled progress for black Floridians who had long been neglected by white society! After repeal came new restrictions on drinking fountains established by local leaders seeking To prevent race riots!!! However these regulations were eventually rescinded due to public outcry!!! In 1951Clermont voters approved annexation by Miami Beach effective January 1st following years of campaigning by both Mayor William Pritchett (D)and City Councilmember Major Nelson (D)! This event marked Miami Beach's incorporation into Broward County!!!!
