Clermont, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida on the border of Clermont and unincorporated Palm Beach County. The population was 7,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1907 by developer George Orchard and lumberman John J. Payne as a small farming village on 40 acres (16 hectares) of land near Indian Harbour beach. In 1912, Clermont became an incorporated municipality with a mayor-council form of government and a school system that included two schools and one agricultural high school. By 1920, when the first airfield opened at Yuma Key, the population had grown to 2,500 people with 210 homes. In 1945, during World War II, Clermont became an important embarkation point for troops moving into South Korea because it was within easy reach of naval bases in nearby Clearwater and St Petersburg. After the war ended in 1945, the military vacated the area and development increased along I-95 until 1970 when Clermont residents made common cause with neighboring Palm Beach County to fight plans by then-County Manager Claude Pepper to annex much of their rural area into larger developments known as "The Villages." This battle led to what has been called "The Battle for Claremont". During this encounter between angry Roncalli residents and pepper's men some people were killed including future Mayor Joe Ganim; Ganim later apologized for his role in leading to violence that night outside Claremont's only grocery store Some years ago there were reports that there was evidence that someone triedto assassinate then Mayor Joe Ganim while he was delivering groceries from Claremont's grocery store However no such evidence exists
