In 1962, Interstate 95 was built through Polk County and much of Clermont came under its jurisdiction; however, most of the downtown business district remains independent today. In 1999-2000, Hurricane Floyd caused extensive damage to the community; however, due to financial donations from residents and businesses alike CLERMONT Recovery Project managed to restore many aspects of downtown including streetscape restoration and lighting upgrades as well as making significant repairs to homes which were impacted by floodwaters/damage during that storm.

Clermont is the only incorporated town in Polk County. The first permanent settler in what would become Clermont was John Bischoff, who arrived on July 5, 1837. He built a cabin on his farmstead which still stands today and where he raised chickens and pigs. Clermont's rich history begins with its founding as aVillage by early German settlers who came to Clearwater Bay in 1836 seeking new land to settle after selling their holdings in St Petersburg, Florida. They named their new community Clermont after one of their leaders, Captain Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Claussen (1784-1854). Claussen had come to America from Germany in 1819 and had served as an aide-de-camp to Prince Frederick of Prussia during his campaign against Spanish forces at Pensacola Beach near Tampa Bay. When war broke out between Spain and American France in 1812, Claussen became involved and was wounded at Monterrey before sailing for southeast Florida on HMS Erebus when it sank off Cape Canaveral on October 14th of that year with General James Kenedy aboard. On November 11th 1840 Claussen married Anna Maria Meyerhoffer (née Hofer) of St Petersburg and soon began construction on what would become his home: a log cabin on Creek Road about three miles east of present-day Clermont Village. In the summer of 1841 the Bischoffs moved into their new home and started raising hogs; they were joined by other early settlers including Peter Hutton (1814-1898), George Ritchie (1816-1865), John Goudreau (1800-1881), Nicholas Jurasiewicz (1800-1882) – all men from Poland – as well as several women immigrants: Kitty Bemis (c1792-?), Martha Cookman (flourished 1799-) or Catharine Cookson? lived with them until 1830 when they emigrated westward via Ohio under contract from Drury Lane near Cincinnati; Nancy Smith remained behind to help tend the farm while her husband traveled away so she could learn how to ride a horse! By 1850 there were ten families residing within the established village limits - six Germans, four Poles/Ukrainians/Lithuanians/Slavs, two Scots/Irish Americans - supplemented by assorted Dutch converts shipping overland from Holland’s Utrecht Province following religious freedom declarations made there earlier that year! In late 1850 or earliest 1861 some members of the original eleven households formed another group known as “The Eleven Martyrs” whose purpose was “to promote Christianity among free negroes living around us” although no formal organization ever materialized! Local historian Dixie Lee has suggested this second “ patriotic grouping” may have been inspired by similar meetings being held also nearby at Morningside Cemetery south of downtown Tampa where white abolitionists serried up data listing all black citizensDialing numbers for service provided thereby maintaining public morale during hard times…the Garrisonian socialists among them! However this theory remains largely unsubstantiated given that no records exist documenting any such gatherings having taken place anywhere near Clermont during these initial years following its incorporation into Polk County !!!!! That said it likely did take place due north towards Winter Quarters (/ old Fort Myers) along US Highway 41A where various abolitionist meetings were taking place monthly prior to & during President Andrew Johnson’s War Between The States!!!!! In short numerous local residents / groups gathered here periodically throughout those years leading up to statehood !!!!! Incidentally one such group later emerged known as The Patriots which met regularly at SpringHill Golf Club adjacent Lake Wales until disbanded circa 2006 due lack Of interest !!!!! Interestingly enough both Spring Hill Golf Club & current day Lake Wales are located just east & southeast respectively OF WHERE Captain Claussen once sat w hen he Raiseed hogs…..onetime owner & operator thereof!!!!!!
