With these fields under construction, steel production increased abruptly as did production at both Steele Bros. Mill & Aircraft Corp., making it possible for local businesses such as Hecht's Grocery Store #2 (now Southern Living) and Ford dealership #3 (now part of Hendrick Motorsports) to thrive while also providing jobs for locals during World War II.
