In 1821, Captain John Smith discovered land within present-day Clermont that he named after his native village of Clauson on the St Johns River in Canada: Gadsden Bayou (now known as English Bayou). The first store in Clermont opened on December 12, 1892 by JB Brainard and it was called the Floridian Saloon & Grille. The original Post Office was established at 318 N Main Street on November 21, 1893 by Wm Hite and operated until 1907 when it moved to its present location at 4th Avenue South. At that time it was located just south of where modern day US 59 meets Interstate 95; however, Highway 95 bypassed Clermont altogether during its construction project in the early 2000s which left most residents without access to essential services such as transportation or healthcare. In 1954, Jacksonville annexed much of Seminole County east of I-95 so that it would be able to include more densely populated areas within its boundaries; this included all ofBrevard County except for parts of Citrus Heights and Daytona Beach which remained unincorporated until 1994 when they merged into neighboring City of Sunrise .Clarmont became a city on January 5th 1997 having passed an ordinance being drafted by then Mayor Tim Carpenter which allowed for annexation applications from any municipality with 500 or more citizens regardless of whether they had voted against annexation or not previously . On October 29th 1984 Hurricane Andrew struck Cocoa Island resulting in extensive damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure including several hospitals with patients still inside them; although no fatalities were reported directly due to Andrew , many local families lost members who were caught up between Irma’s winds (which topped out around 100 mph) and high water levels caused by Irma’s aftermath flooding across Brevard county destroying homesboats docks bridges etc leaving entire communities impoverished ). For six days following landfall CCLF flew emergency food drops into Everglades National Park providing critical supplies like water filters medications tents clothes hygiene items to thousands Of starving refugees . As a result Hurricane Andrew has been recognized as one local disaster specifically cited for creating jobs throughout our community helping turn things around for locals & surrounding communities
Clermont, Florida was founded in 1837 by Captain John P. Clermont and his wife Lucy. The first post office was established at Clermont in 1839. In 1841, the town of Clermont became a county seat and the name of the county was changed to Brevard County. The county courthouse was built in 1889 and is still used today.
