This new port would play an important role in trade during the Haitian Revolution which began in 1793 and ended with Napoleon’s victory over France two years later. A group of men from Stonington (now Hartford) organized themselves into a company called the Second Plantation Company to purchase land around present day Waldo Road and NW First Street for farming purposes. On July 8, 1828 they purchased five acres adjoining present day Broward Boulevard from Arent Heyman for $6 per acre ($60 total). They named their new farmland “Clermont” after the French city of Cernay-en-Yvelines where they had been living while developing their enterprise. The first home constructed on this land was called “Prentice” after one of its original owners; however it only lasted until 1834 when it burned down due to fire caused by lightning。
