The project was completed in 2003 and has since made many improvements to the town's infrastructure including adding more than 20 new retail businesses along with dozens of apartments and homesites within walking distance of every single business establishment in Clermont! It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first humans to live in what is now Clermont were Native American Seminoles who had been living there for centuries before that. European explorers arrived in 1695 and named it after Louis XIV of France because of its fertile soil. In 1821 the Miami and Erie Canal was completed and allowed goods to flow freely from Stonington, Connecticut to Key West, Florida. Thanks to this new trade route, Clermont became a center for merchandise sales and commerce throughout southern Florida. Additionally, the area was strategic due to its location on a natural bay which made it an ideal place for shipbuilding and naval warfare during the 19th century. By 1881 Clermont had become one of two counties in Hillsborough County - along with Fort Myers - that were organized as townships. However, much like other incorporated cities in Tampa Bay during this time period (such as Clearwater), Clermont experienced decline and contraction over a period of several decades beginning around 1920s until it slipped into obscurity by the early 1960s when white flight began moving residents out of central Tampa Bay areas such as Clearwater and St Petersburg towards newly developed suburbs east of Interstate 434 such as Maitland Park and Plantation – all within easy commuting distance from Tallahassee or Gainesville – further marginalizing rural Hillsborough County communities like Clermont between these major metropolitan areas. This decline continued until 1974 when state legislators eliminated township status for Hillsborough County so that all municipalities could be consolidated into one county under one government structure without any special benefits or voting rights granted to either townships or villages located within their boundaries; thereby finally restoring some lost community autonomy while also increasing suburban development pressures on rural areas throughout southeastern Florida thus reversing some earlier trends but leaving many communities struggling financially even after consolidation occurred In recent years however there has been some resurgence among locals who are working to revive both their economybased tourism industry as well as support local environmental initiatives including land conservation efforts which have helped preserve many extant cultural artifacts dating back centuries including significant segments of Indian Creek Trail Runs which run through downtown Clermont today
