Clermont is a small town in Clermont County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,988 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Clermont County. From 1881 to 1959 it was part of Lakeland. The community was named for Colonel Cornelius H. Clermont of the Union Army during the American Civil War and as such resemblance to Colchester, England is common among locals. The first store in Clermont opened in 1881 and local residents built their first home around that time too. In 1906 the post office moved from Lakeland to Clermont and over time many businesses have been established including a bank, grocery store, auto dealership and carnival concessionaire which amusement park now occupies space on Main Street near where the old school once stood. In 1875, Jno Ladd opened a grocery store at 4557 Old US 1 near present day SR 437 in what would eventually become Clermont Township along with two other stores: Brown's Grocery and Sills & Snyder's Store which were both founded by James Sills in 1881 and continued operation until 1951 respectively. After World War II, many businesses closed due to relocation or consolidation within the larger Orlando area; however, The Burchfield Store still remains open as an independent business today making Clermont one of few remaining communities left from that eraatively intact within Polk County!
