Clermont, Florida is an unincorporated community in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 997 as of the 2010 census. It is located on State Road 524 northwest of Gainesville. The area that now makes up Clermont was settled by English colonists in the late 18th century. In 1784, the town of Clermont was founded by John Wilkinson and James Robertson. The name Clermont comes from "clerke" which means "a smallholder." By 1800, the town had a post office and a school. In 1821, Governor Manuel Fonseca designated Clermont as a Spanish land grant to Jacobo de la Hoya y Ayala. De la Hoya leased this tract from the Seminole people for £500 per year starting in 1822. La Hoya purchased additional land from the Seminoles in 1825 for £2,000 more than he had originally paid for it. A cotton gin was built near present-day downtown Clermont in 1830 and became known as the Wilkinson Cotton Ginnery; it still operates today as part of Suncoast Airways. In 1850, Colonel Isaac Shelby donated 60 acres (24 ha) to build a church on what is now US-352 east of town center; St Mary's Episcopal Church burned down in 1903 but its cornerstone still survives at nearby Fort Payne State Park After Seminole removal engineered by Indian Removal Act of 1830 led to large numbers of African Americans being forced into slave labor throughout Southwest Florida during Reconstruction period – including many along US-352 corridor – most black settlers who arrived after 1865 were white freedmen or their descendants who had already left or were moving away when they encountered Black Nationalist Movement (BNM) guerrilla forces operating around McIntosh County seat of Ocala beginning early 1870s under leadership/direction/commanded by Elijah Muhammad – later renamed Nation Of Islam (NOI). During BNM insurgency first major skirmishes with local law enforcement took place northeast corner where present day intersection Ulysses S Grant Boulevard & West High Street stands close to former McIntosh plantation then known as Nolen’s Plantation just south side FM 794 junction with old alignment SR 524 road thence east along old alignment CR 346 highway to reach Orange Blossom Trail junction & here encamped begin battle against Federal troops commanded by Brigadier General William Troup beginning afternoon 20 October 1870 Battle ended early morning 21 October 1870 following successful storming over Federal positions resulting in death/capture or hidingof numerous participants including General Troup himself & several hundred Native American warriors plus estimated 500 mounted militiamen also engaged Battle resulted inloss for Federal troops overall about 30 killed wounded and 100 captured mostly Indians

Clermont, Florida is located in the southwestern corner of Florida and is bordered by Miami on the south, Key West on the east, Tampa Bay on the north, and Orange County on the west. It was named for General James Clermont who fought in the American Revolution. The population of Clermont as of 2010 was 12,712. In 1840, Captain John Hernando had a survey made of what would become Clermont and it was proposed that it be name after Colonel James K. Polk who served as President of United States from 1844 to 1849. The land that would now make up Clermont was first settled by Indians in what is now Sarasota County in 1794. In 1824, Alfred Sperry bought 3 thousand acres of land including what is now Clermont from the Seminole Tribe and began to develop it into a town. By 1830, Sperry had built a sawmill and other businesses within town limits. When Andrew Jackson became president in 1830 he decided to transfer ownership of Florida’s national treasury from Spain to America which created a lot of tension between Spain and America over this issue since they considered themselves owners of all Alfalfa country extending from Texas through Mexico In 1840 Jacksonville businessmen George Waddell & Augustus Kelley formed an alliance with Captain John Hernando to purchase 4 thousand more acres northwest of present-day Jacksonville along with some buildings including a millrace they were using as their base camp while exploring new territory for Gadsden Purchase land acquisition purposes. They named their new venture “Clermont” after General James K Polk who had been instrumental in helping them win independence from Spain The partnership lasted until 1850 when both men sold out to Jacksonville businessman David Bogue Bogue started developing much more rural areas east of current day Jacksonville but never developed anything at Clermont which remain abandoned today except for some agriculture fields used by local farmers currently . However , there are still remnants from earlier development at least one structure still standing – building #2 known locally as “The Old Mill” It wasn't until 1907 when developer Maurice O'Neill purchased 1/4 acre near current day Dania Beach for $5 which he turned into his own golf course did things start happening at Clermont . After purchasing property surrounding his course (including many houses) O'Neill began construction on what would eventually become Palm Beach County's first modern beach resort called "Clermont" . He opened it up to visitors in 1909 complete with its own golf Course
