At that time, there were only a few dozen residents living in Clermont proper while most people lived around the outlying villages which consisted of farms and residences scattered throughout rural Polk County at that time: Berthoud (now Hialeah), Clearwater Beach (then called New Port Richey), Dunnellon (now Fort Myers), Spring Hill (then called Belle Glade), Pensacola (then called Largo) and Winter Haven In 1936, two more families moved into Clermont from Winter Haven; these were brothers Hermann Schmidt and Wilhelm Schmidt Jr., also known as Johnny Appleseed because he planted apples near Bennettsville on State Road 9 south of Winter Haven . In 1941, Charlie Paddock opened his first grocery store in downtown Clermonto . That year saw significant changes with World War II starting up and many men serving overseas during that time period received their military training here at campgrounds like Camp Blanding along with local businesses opening up to provide essential wartime products like food , clothing etc . After hostilities ended in 1945 many veterans returned home but not all did so immediately; some stayed behind until they could find jobs or found permanent homes elsewhere As post-war days unfolded many people decided to return home including young families looking for an open-air market where they could purchase fresh produce before picking it up at friends’ houses or going door-to-door selling Produce Sams Additionally , several churches had been established since war times by pastors who had left their congregations to serve others ; these include First Presbyterian Church #1 on Sixty Second Street between Park Avenue West & Rollins Boulevard ; St Philips Lutheran Church on State Road 9 North towards Bowen Drive ; Hispanic Methodist Episcopal Church #2 on Court Street between Park Avenue West & Gold Drive
