Clermont, Florida is a small town in Clay County, Florida. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Clermont is located on State Road 441 east of Kissimmee and south of Sanford. The first Europeans to visit Clermont were Spanish explorers who set out from Santa Fe in 1559 looking for a route to India through Central America. They discovered what they thought was a great Indian fishing ground but soon realized that the Indians were not there and returned empty-handed. In 1821, James Ketchum founded Ketchumville on the now abandoned site of present day Clermont after being inspired by his discovery of fresh water resources east of Tampa Bay. In 1824, Isaac Eaton arrived in search of new land to farm and settled near what is now downtown Clermont on land owned by John Gwynnham. Eaton named his community Eatonville after him and road leading thereto still bears his name today. In 1838, George White purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) around present day downtown Clermont from John Gwynnham for $1 per acre ($14 per hectare). He began developing it into a farming community with an Economy Farm School as its centerpiece and built three churches – First Baptist Church (1839), Second Baptist Church (1840), and Methodist Episcopal Church (1841). From this small village grew what is now known as "the old City". It wasn't until 1893 when Orlando absorbed all of Clay County into its boundaries that Clermont became incorporated as a separate municipality. At that time it had 2,868 residents with a total $2 million in assessed value according to county records. By 1900, its population had grown to 3,257 with an assessed value of $10 million dollars making it one of Floridas most expensive communities at the time! Today it has only 1,711 residents but continues to thrive due largely to its strong economy which includes manufacturing companies such as Hanesbrands Inc., Everhart Rubber Company and Honeywell International Plc.; professional sports teams such as the Orlando Magic; major retailers including JCPenney Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Committee chairperson Albertson's department store chain; numerous restaurants including Joe's Pizza Place; two hospitals - St Marys Regional Medical Center/Orlando Regional Hospital/St Joseph Regional Medical Center; four schools - Old Colony Middle School/Ridgeview Elementary School/Huntington Beach High School/Westlake High School; several thousand square feet (200 m²) or more commercial space anchored by two large shopping malls - Citrus Mall northeast in Ormond Beach adjacent Interstate 4A off US 192 / I-4A service area northward along SR 441 providing jobs for scores or more people year round both inside or outside these malls; one college - Truman State University
