Clearwater is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,532 at the 2010 census. Clearwater is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Clearwater was first settled by Seminoles in the 18th century and as early as 1827, there were reports of Indian attacks on white settlers in what is today Clearwater. By 1840, all Native Americans living within 400 miles (640 km) of Jacksonville had been killed or driven away. In 1861, Spanish colonists founded a mission at San Pedro de Allende on Clearwater's current site after seeking permission from the Creek nation to establish a Mission Santa Elena on their territory east of Lake Okeechobee. In 1860s-1870s there were another three missions established in what is now Monroe County: Anacostia (founded 1868), Saint Joseph (founded 1871), and Bahia Blanca (founded 1870). Mexican American pioneers also arrived during this time and started farming areas around present-day Jacksonville and Miami Beach; some cleared land for towns while others built homes. The first post office called "Sugarloaf" was established in 1889; it moved to its current location near downtown Clearwater in 1893 after being destroyed by an ice storm two years earlier. A branch office was opened at Estero which served most of Orange County until 1907 when it merged with Tampa Bay District Headquarters to form St Petersburg District Headquarters (). During World War II,Clearwater became home to many Naval Air Station(NAF) activity including Naval Air Station Pensacola and Naval Auxiliary Air Facility Key West which manufactured aircraft for USAAF pilots flying out of NAS Ormond Beach/St Canaveral airfields north of Daytona Beach. In 1946 NAF Pensacola closed operations while other naval stations such as NAS Jacksonville continued operation until 1958 when they too were closed due to budget cuts caused by inflationary pressures brought about by World War II . The last military unit assigned to NAS Pensacola before its closure was Helicopter Squadron VH-3D “Wasp” which operated from 1949 through 1951 under Commander First Class Chester Eubanks IV who flew ASU-188 “Shark” helicopters from NAS Pensacola Municipal Airport during these years
Clearwater is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–kingsville–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clearwater was founded in 1892 as a town on Clearwater River. The first recorded settlement in Clearwater was made by Captain John A. Stroud and his men from Georgia on August 2, 1892 when they landed at Clearwater River for the purpose of exploring what lay to the north and east. They discovered valuable salt flats and named their new town "Clearwater". After a year's exploration they returned to Georgia on September 25th with news that they had found no land suitable for settlement in this area but did find an encampment of Seminole Indians living near Lake Okeechobee which they attacked and killed. This event helped start the Indian Wars between Florida Seminoles and United States Army troops which continued until 1898 when hostilities ended with treaties signed by both sides.
