The first documented reference to Clearwater is from 1695 when it was known as "Carre". In 1819 Clearwater was chartered as a town by Governor John Cordon and named for the clear turquoise water that surrounded it. In 1838 Clearwater became an outlying township of Stonington, Connecticut. It reverted to its original name in 1842 when it became one of the five townships in Monroe County created from what were then parts of Jacksonville and Stonington. In 1907 Clearwater annexed land from Indian Key to form what would become known as White Sands Beach. The annexation allowed for white beachgoers who had bought properties on Indian Key since 1907 access to state-owned land located between Stonington Creek and White Sands Beach. The post office at Clearwater opened on July 2, 1903 under the name West End; it changed its name to Clearwater on October 7, 1903 after being moved from its previous location two miles east of downtown Jacksonville. On January 17, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt visited Clearwater while he was campaigning for re-election and inaugural ceremonies were held at West End Elementary School in homage to his visit which included speeches by Representative James Fenton (D-Jacksonville) and Mayor Augustus Herrington (D-Clearwater). On December 12th 1898 Hurricane Andrew caused extensive damage throughout much of what is now Monroe County including most notably in Plantation Key where over 95% of homes were destroyed or damaged with no hope of reconstruction until many years later when money was finally available from insurance proceeds following another hurricane (Hurricane Wilma). $2 million was appropriated by Congress within days followingAndrew's landfall making it one of the largest such reparations ever given directly or indirectly to citizens impacted by natural disasters prior thereto. Notable residents during this time include author Gertrude Stein who stayed at Belle Isle Insane Asylum before returning home two weeks later; Drs Heman Sweatt and Willis Ward both practicing physicians active during that time; Congressman Addison WickerTEXT A new sheriff’s office building – completed 1915 – replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire just three months earlier while serving as courthouse annexe due primarily to lack of funding resulting from World War I considerations Although initially intended only for use during court appearances only about half those needed were actually used subsequent repairs resulted in enlarging courtroom capacity up until present day currently seating 632 spectators although standing room only allows 150 persons maximum per file There have been numerous incarnations through various names including: Pinellas Park / Villa Marina / Crystal Bay / Sunrise Cove / clearwatersportsclubhouse / seagullleague
