Clearwater is a town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,912 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clearwater is located at (32.640956, -87.866172). The first known settlers in what today is Clearwater were farmers and their families who arrived from Georgia in 1853. They named their new home "Creek Cove" after a nearby body of water they saw while out exploring the area. By 1854, Creek Cove had a post office and two small businesses: a mill and an ice cream parlor. In 1860 Clearwater had its first schoolhouse and by 1865 it had five schools - three for white children and two for African American children. A few years later James Sitton established J&J Sitton Iron & Coal Company which mined coal near Clearwater until 1907 when it shut down due to overproduction. In 1917 Clearwater became one of nine cities in Pinellas County when it was created from parts of St Petersburg and Dunedin municipalities that were separately incorporated as towns but failed to receive enough votes to make statewide status. On November 3, 1920 Clearway voters approved incorporation into Pinellas County by referendum; this action placed the town within county boundaries for all purposes including taxation with no right to vote or be represented on council until annexation into countywide government occurred in 1933 In 1941 during World War II Clearwaterwas designated as an airbase training center with primary functions being used by RAF Bomber Command as well as USAAF fighter planes stationed there during the war . After the war ended many military personnel left clear water plus many new residents moved in while most businesses closed either because of lack of customers or competition from other local communities . As time passed more businesses opened up but most residents lost interest in living so close to Naval Air Station Tampa Bay which had become fully operational . Clearwater, Florida is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,813 at the 2010 census. Clearwater is the county seat of Escambia County. The city has two main neighborhoods: the downtown district and Ybor City. The area that would become Clearwater was first settled by African Americans in 1859 as part of Mobile Bayou which extended from Tampa to Pensacola. The land for Clearwater was purchased by John Witherspoon in 1868 from . After Witherspoon's death in 1869, his son John A. Witherspoon assumed control of the family's estate and began developing it into what is today Clearwater Beach. In 1905, Captain Ishmael Phelps merged his company with Jardine & Co., captains of tugboats operating on Tampa Bay rivers during prohibition years, creating one of America's largest maritime companies. He named their new business "Phelps Navigation Company" after himself and Samuel Ewing (1815-1905), an early American entrepreneur who had played a leading role in promoting Gulf shipping before prohibition put a stop to it. In 1917 Captain James Bogue became captain of USNS Trinity which operated out of Clearwater as part of World War I Allied victory efforts following America's entry into that war on April 6th via gunboat USS Ponce (PG-4) assisted by SS North Carolina (10".9") under commandof Lt.(jg.) Byron Dorman off shore near Nowata Island east side Sound - this event helped make Soo Largo/ Clearwater Harbor homeport for USN Trinity subsequent operations ashore including landing craft support; mine sweep; Salvage Squadron Three; Patrol Squadron Two; Naval Air Station Key West - all now tenant ships or parts thereof since 1951 associated with Naval Air Station Seal Beach California while NAS Key West personnel have been permanently assigned there since 1962 when they were transferred from NAS Key West to NAS Seal Beach consequently making NAS Seal Beach clear water jurisdiction concurrent with that hereinafter mentioned jurisdictional arrangement hereinbelow
The area now known as Clearwater was first inhabited by the Timucua people, who lived in the northwestern corner of Florida. In 1539, Spanish explorers discovered and named this place Santa Clara de la Vera Cruz after a chapel in Spain. The area became part of English-controlled Florida in 1763 when Spain ceded it to America on the Treaty of Paris following the Seven Years War. In 1821, Clearwater was created from parts of St. Petersburg and Tampa Counties when Georgia acquired these areas as part of its Louisiana Purchase. At this time, Clearwater was one of several Indian reservations that were established in what is now Tampa County. The Seminole Indians had been living in this area for centuries before white settlers arrived. In 1838, a group of Seminoles led by Tipon Chief Oconnor attacked a small community near Clearwater called Estero during an uprising against Spanish rule. This attack began a long series of conflicts between the Spanish and Seminole tribes that would continue until Toggle's Treaty negotiated by US President Polk ended these hostilities in 1865. By 1850, Clearwater had become an important port on Tampa Bay due to its location at the mouth of Tampa Bay River and its ability to provide reliable access to shipping along both sides of the bay. The town grew rapidly during this time and reached its peak around 1860 with over 1,000 residents living there. However, growth petered out during the 1870s because transportation infrastructure was not yet developed enough to support such large numbers of people; instead, most business activities took place within reach of larger cities such as Tampa or Jacksonville. With only 60 residents remaining by 1900, Clearwater experienced rapid decline and fell into disrepair until it was incorporated as a city proper in 1925 under Mayor John Witherspoon's administration. Today, Clearwater remains an unincorporated community located near downtown Tampa with few permanent residents remaining
