Clearwater is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first settler in Clearwater was James White on December 15, 1824. By 1828, there were five families living in Clearwater including three Englishmen and one American man named John Whitehead who came ashore with his own ship on November 11, 1828 from Savannah in Georgia to explore the Alabama River system before sailing downriver to Mobile Bay and thence down the Gulf coast of Florida. He abandoned his vessel near what is now known as "White Hall" when a storm washed it away during winter of 1830-31; Whitehall's men built a log cabin there which still stands today (the building now fronts Third Street). In 1832, another Englishman by the name of John Burgess built a home about two miles (3 km) south of where he had been living since 1827 on land that would become Clearwater Beach today. Afterward several other gentlemen followed suit until by 1840 there were ten white people living in Clearwater Cove alone out of an estimated 25–30 total settlers who crossed paths along Alabama Creek between Mobile Bay and present day Jacksonville Landing during this early period when navigation was difficult across open water against severe natural obstacles including shoals, sandbars and tidal waves. In 1840 Captain Edwin Drake sent a letter from Havana asking for volunteers to help him capture pirates stranded onlins off Cape Canaveral Peninsula which resulted in over 60 men enlisting with Captain Drake aboard HMS Victory under Admiral Cornwallis at Pensacola Bay on September 5th & 6th 1840 for 2 weeks service transporting goods up&down river then back across bay to Havana loaded with pirated treasure worth an estimated $2 million dollars prior to their return trip via Tallahassee Sounds & Stonington Channel [sic - not Tampa Sound] arriving safely at Plymouth November 16th after spending 10 days ashore]. Many could never find their way back home again so many ended up being born here or moving inland permanently such as Arthur Berryhill who married waitress Elizabeth Swain here in 1870 & became well-known locally as 'Dr.' Berryhill'. In 1861 Captains George Dixon & Hiram Swayne led 300 soldiers into battle against Seminole Indians at what would later be known as Fort Pickens just east of present day downtown Clearwater Beach – one of only two engagements fought during Florida’s statehood process that saw U.S military presence[ Note: According to some sources this engagement also took place west of Fort Pickens but within modern day Sanford/Clearwater Beach limits ]. A few years later Commodore Matthew Perry arrived At PensacolaBayto conquer Cuba following Spanish withdrawal from America occurring May 14th1865 thereby ending US East Coast Naval Operations[Note: This event has been incorrectly reported as taking place off Cape Canaveral Peninsula ]. On July 21st 1865 Commodore Perry landed his flagship USS Constitutionat TampaBaywith orders to blockade Cuban ports pending decision by United States Congress whether Cuba should be annexed into the Union or not resulting in much public outcry nationally over highhandedness by America[ Note: As mentioned earlier this engagement likely occurred offshore due south towards modern day Sanford/Clearwater Beach ],resultingina large fire that destroyed most buildings within sight including Vedder's Wharf which remains a conspicuous ruin today]. Aftermath Commodore Perry ordered all ships returned home & USS Constitution sailed back aground northeastofSt Petersburg without further incident until she finally sunk August 12th1866 Blockading Cuban port . Unfortunately for Americans little did they know that Spain actually regained control over Cuba just months later after Commodore Perry departedbleeding heavily from Battle Of San Juan de la Maleta . Clearwater, Florida is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,629 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee–Sarasota Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clearwater was founded in 1871 by James A. Clearwater and his brothers John and William Clearwater as a citrus orchard and farming community on the banks of the Suwannee River. The town name derived from its natural clear water supply which allowed for easy transportation of goods to and from nearby Citrusville. The first store in Clearwater opened in 1872 on Ferry Road, just east of present-day US-1. In 1886, Clearwater became one of three towns chartered by Seminole County under the auspices of the National Agricultural Security Administration – then known as Forest Service – to provide market access for leased land near Lake Okeechobee. By 1900, Clearwater had a post office, two churches (one Methodist), five stores (three hardware stores and two grocery stores), six residences (including four presidential homes), twelve businesses (eleven hotels/motels, eleven restaurants/cafes/bars, nine Native American casinos/, seven dairy farms/, three lumber mills/, one cotton gin/, one pigskin factory/) and fifty-four residents; it had also annexed the neighboring village of Citrusville. By 1930,[4] Clearwater's population had grown to 1,865 with seventy-six businesses; it still boasted Presidential Homes #2 through #5 as well as several other buildings not included in census totals such as seventeen schools and seventy-eight public works facilities including twenty fire departments/. In 1950[5] following passage of Senate Bill 51001 which established countywide education funding formulas,[6] Clearwater voted to become a school district with an initial enrollment of 2K students within what would become Pinellas County.[7] As part of that effort[8], leaders developed plans for $10 million worth of new infrastructure including: a new high school building completed in 1969; $3 million for roadways (mainly Main Street); $2 million for parkland adjacent to existing schools;[9][10][11][12][13]and an additional $1 million for technology enhancements across all districts statewide.[14][15][16] And so began what would be called "The Great School District Expansion" - one that would see over 60% growth during its first twenty years alone!
