Clearwater's history dates back to 1837 when it was founded as part of the Ruskin Colony. The town name comes from "Creek" and "Wastewater". Today Clearwater is a popular tourist destination for its clear waters and beautiful landscape. The first settler in Clearwater was Andrew Johnson who arrived in 1837. He named his new community after himself, Clearwater Creek. In 1839 John Fenton built a cabin near present-day Gulfport on the west side of Clearwater Creek. In 1840 John Purdy also settled in Clearwater and named his cabin West Point on the same creek bank as Fenton's house. These early settlers were later replaced by more permanent residents such as Jno Easley and Amos Stroud who developed land around what is now downtown Clearwater. In 1845 Captain James Renwick of Mobile Bay chartered the Ruskin Expedition to explore Long Island Sound and Lake Tampa Bay which led to the discovery of Tampa Bay by Europeans. They renamed their settlement Ruskin after this exploration team leader, Captain Renwick himself being one of the original settlers in Clearwater Township (now Pinellas County) on October 11th that year northwest of what is now downtown Clearwater on Palmyra Bluff Road (later US 1). Ruskin had been trading with Native Americans since he had sailed down Tampa Bay in 1794 searching for an easier route to South America than sailing round Cape Horn through difficult weather conditions then navigating along dangerous coasts all the way back home again; he thought that Asia would be much easier to reach than Europe thus reducing time needed for passage between Asia and North America – something which had never been done before! After his return journey from Cuba he visited Tampa Bay where he met several natives including Chief Muscogee Jenks who showed him some trade items they’d acquired during their stay there including beads made from shellfish collected at Biscayne Bay just south of Sarasota Harbor; these beads would become very valuable over time because they didn’t corrode like other materials during long ocean voyages which allowed traders like Renwick access to markets throughout Southeast Asia! A few years later Captain William Cushing transferredRuskin Landingpoint about two miles north-west of modern day Downtown Clear Water onto bluffs overlooking today's Intracoastal Waterway (IWL).
