The first Europeans to visit Clearwater were Spanish explorers who named it San Marcos de la Bahia (St. Marc's Bay) in 1565 for SaintMarc, one of Jesus' apostles. In 1821, USS Alabama Cutter Juno discovered land that would become Clearwater on the west coast of Florida and named it after Jacksonville's mayor John Fonseca as a way to promote Jacksonville's growth as a seaport and naval base during the Seminole Wars against Spain. In 1827, James Pritchard built his Mansion on Park Avenue which still stands today as part of Clearwater's core commercial district. This was followed by other major settlers such as Arent Hickey in 1830, Wm. Smith in 1834 and Jno Fiske in 1840 who established small villages around their homes until they all moved to larger townships when Clearwater was founded as an unincorporated community on April 12th, 1888 by Colonel Jno Fiske with 1 acre (0 hectare) lot donated from Captain William Stroudsby near present day US-1 Bridge Road/Highway 64A just east of downtown Sarasota Harborirting Kankakee Lake which then drained into what is now known as Tampa Bay. On July 4th 1896 Clearwater voters passed an ordinance annexing Manatee County making it one unit with a population of 362 residents; however this referendum failed by less than two thirds percent due to lack of signatures from registered voters living within Manatee County boundaries at the time). The following year Colonel Jno Fiske organized the first elections for members (already elected officials)of the new town council with 34 individuals voting being apportioned among six wards represented on council which became known collectively today as "The Alleys". On May 15th 1898 construction began for what would eventually become First National Bank building at current day NE 24TH Street/SR 3276 - still standing today inside City Hall complex adjacent to Interstate 95 northbound lanes only destruction having occurred subsequent Hurricane Andrew in 1998 which severely damaged much property within city limits including include site later rebuilt using state assistance under terms included hereinabove This photo taken circa early 1920 shows clear water frontage seen looking south across dead mangroves
