The first firearms in Clearwater were shotguns. A group of men, led by Captain John Smith, obtained a shotgun from the Indian chief during the Seminole War. The first pistols were made from hickory trees. One pistol was made from an old rifle stock and filled with lead shot to make a fire starter. These pistols were used as protection against pirates and other criminals. After the American Revolution, colonists in Florida began to grow crops and raise livestock to provide food for their families. They needed weapons to protect themselves against Indians and other predators who roamed the area. In 1794, Clearwater residents bought three shotguns from Captain Jameson at a cost of $10 each. Clearwater was founded in 1867 as a small town on the St. Johns River in what is now Jacksonville, Florida. The first white person to settle in Clearwater was Elisha D. King, who arrived with his wife and two children in 1867. King built a log cabin on the banks of the river and named it Clearwater after he saw clear water from a distance. Clearwater became an important military port for both Spain and America during the Spanish-American War (1898-1902). In 1910, Clearwater became part of Jacksonville when it was annexed by that city. The merger led to increased traffic and development around Clearwater proper, which has caused some issues such as high levels of pollution along the riverine area where most of the city is located.
