Clearwater is located on US 98 and Clear Water River. The first permanent settler in Clearwater was James Means who arrived in 1837. Means built a log cabin on the east bank of the Clearwater River and named it after his home town of Charleston, South Carolina. In 1840 Means married Anna White and they moved to what is now known as downtown Clearwater where they started a mercantile business. They also built a house for themselves on Lake George Boulevard which still stands today. In 1851 Means sold his interest in the mercantile business to John Waddell who renamed it Clearwater Merchants Bank & Trust Company In 1870 Captain William Aitken purchased land atshore on Bulls Bayou from Means and founded Aitken Island Plantation with twelve families living there until 1898 when they were forced to leave by Hurricane Andrew which destroyed their homes and plantations near Fort Pierce. The survivors adopted the name "Clearwater" due to its clear water shoreline which made landing easy during storms such as Andrew's passage through Florida coastal communities during that era. In 1945, Captain Lewis Witt donated land along Bulls Bayou north of present day Clearwater for use as a Naval Air Station (NAS). NAS Clearwater was established on 8 October 1945 with pilot training operations beginning 1 November 1945 until 31 December 1946 when all flying ended because of World War II ending hostilities in Europe On 15 July 1957,[3] NAS Clearwater became an FAA airfield when authorization was granted by Congress following enactment of Air Force General Order 5956.[4] As USAF Pensacola AFB had been closed since 1949[5], NASClearWater served as headquarters for First Continental Aeronautics Command Operational Group (OG-1) - responsible for civil aviation activities within southeast Florida - until its closure by Commander First AF East Coast Divisions 36th Operations Wing effective 9 September 2008[6]. On 3 May 2009 OG-1 shifted its mission to Miramar Navy Air Base (NORAD), California under command Third Fleet Admdr Mark E Ziegler effective 1 September 2009[7]. With NAS Miramar gone,[8] USS Grumman HMC-14 Mako Shark helicopter squadron activated initial commanding officer(s)[9][10] from 12 August 2009 – 14 August 2009 while USS Grumman HMC-14 Mako Shark squadron relieved by Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron VX–79 “Hercules” [11], Seymour Johnson Sea Knights activation commenced 16 August 2009 – 10 January 2010 followed byactivation order NOS 090009 published 9 January 2010 establishing Naval Auxiliary Patrol Squadron 93 [12].
