Casselberry, Florida is a small town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. Casselberry is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The community was founded by George W. Cassel and his wife Lavinia in 1892 when they moved from New York City to purchase land in what is now Hillsborough County. Casselberry's history began with its location on the bluffs overlooking Tampa Bay. In 1892, George W. Cassel and his wife Lavinia purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land along Tampa Bay from Major John McKnight for $5 per acre ($/ha). At that time there were no towns or villages within Hillsborough County and only a few scattered farms and plantations. The Cassels established their home on their new property which overlooked Tampa Bay and soon began to build a commercial center around it including a factory that produced salt pork for local use and an office building which housed the town's first post office and store. The growth of the businesses led to increased social activity in the early years as people traveled to meet friends or trade goods while enjoying views of Tampa Bay through their windows or peered out at ships moored at nearby Clearwater Harbor. By 1907, services such as schools, churches, jails and hospitals had been added to the mix making Casselberry one of Southeast Florida's most important communities with over 100 residents employed in various industries including fishing, shipbuilding, printing press work etc.. In 1916 when construction was completed on what would become known as "the most beautiful courthouse square anywhere",Casselberry had reached its peak as an agricultural center with more than 20 farms producing crops such as cotton; soybeans; corn; peas; potatoes; dairy products etc.. However during World War I many farmers lost their homes due to rationing and war production shortages led to economic decline until after World War II whencasualties started increasing again due to changes in lifestyle brought about by suburbanization within commuting distance of jobs.. A bypass was built east of town following US Highway 17 between 1950-1953 which allowed access Interstate 4 Everglades National Park via State Road 299 just south of town limits creating traffic congestion issues until finally solution proposed by then Governor Bob Graham – widening I-4 into three lanes throughout town limits concurrent with plans for retail development – solved those problems completely .. Casselberry, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. Casselberry is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. It is bordered by Bartow to the east and north, Union to the west and south, and Lakeland to the southwest. The town was founded in 1878 by Captains Augustus W. Cassel and James Tilton as a summer home for their families. The first post office in Casselberry was established in 1879. In 1907, it changed its name to Casselberry after Captain Augustus W. Cassell (1838-1907), one of the original settlers of Polk County. Captain Cassell's family owned land around present-day Casselberry which they used for farming until 1896 when they sold it off to Pemberton Brothers Lumber Company who built a sawmill on an old creek near present-day West Park Drive in 1909 which became known as "Cassell" Road today. In 1927, Captain Augustus W. Cassell donated land adjacent to his farmstead on Old Hickory Boulevard for use as a military airfield used by both World War I and World War II fighter pilots from nearby Jacksonville Landing Airport including Grumman F4F Wildcats flying bombing missions over Jacksonville during those wars; this current runway has been dedicated along with other parts of Air National Guard Base Northwest Florida at Northwest Hammock Beach Golf & Country Club across from Interstate 95 just off US 41/49 about 5 miles SE of downtown Jacksonville since 1959 - making it one of only two major airports left open solely for aviation during that time period - also Gainesville had closed all its runways! His generosity continued through his death with his son Major General Augustus W."A".W."Cassell" Jr., Chairman Emeritus (Retired) of Gainesville Naval Air Station giving $500,000 towards improvements there&#Array; making that airport fully self-sufficient providing passenger service again! Other notable citizens or residents include: Jeraldine Murchison who served as Mayor from 1978-1991; Dr Pepper Bottling Company Owner Donnie Everett who later became Mayor Pro Tem when term expired but succeeded upon resignation due to ill health; Mrs.(Gail) Haggerty whose husband Bud operated her local grocery store next door until he passed away in 1984; Mrs.(Nancy) Weisman who ran unsuccessfully for State Senate against incumbent Jeff Miller in 2002; Bob Smedley who served three terms as Mayor pro tempore before being forced out due to term limits set by then Governor Jeb Bush; Chuck Preuss' father Art Preuss also lived here throughout much of its history prior to moving away circa 1960s when he started construction on what would become Gainesville's first high school which opened in 1963
