Casselberry is located on State Road 441 north-northwest of Jacksonville. Casselberry was founded in 1892 by George and Belle Casselberry as a trading post on the Stono River. In 1902 it became a town and in 1907 it was named for General John P. Gallagher, who had served as military governor of Florida from 1898 to 1903. The Cassellbery Post Office closed in 1959 and all mail stopped arriving until 1984 when it reopened with new annexes on US 301 to the east and west. The community developed around two churches: First Presbyterian and Christ Church of God in Christ which have operated continuously since they were built in 1922 and 1925 respectively. Casselberry is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,929 at the 2010 census. The land around Casselberry was first settled by Seminoles in the early 1800s. A post office called "Casselberry" was established in 1825, and remained in service until 1904. In 1892, John H. Casselberry founded the townsite of Casselberry on his property west of present-day Cassellboro Road. The name reflected Mr. Casselberys effort to rename a farm he owned located east of the town center after his friend and patron General James Kenedy who had fought for US independence from Spain during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1902, an addition to the town was built on what is now Evergreen Drive adjacent tothe local high school which served as both a public school and home of the town's first hospital with eight beds. The post office closed within two years of its opening due to low mail volume which led to increased competition from other towns in Polk County that received Post Office Administration funding for new buildings outside of their urban areas. In 1912, amendments were made to the US Constitution which granted voting rights to citizens of plantation counties such as Polk; as a result, development along Evergreen Drive slowed down as more people moved into nearby cities or rural areas for work during World War I and then again during World War II when military bases were constructed nearby including Camp Beaulieu and Naval Air Station Pensacola . One resident, Mrs Florence Dyson became known nationally for her signature quilt patterns she created utilizing material donated by local residents following Hurricane Andrew which devastated southeast Florida in 1992 . The population reached 5,000 by 1907 and 11,000 by 1923. It became a city in 1933 with its own hospital and police department. The city experienced significant growth during World War II with the construction of naval stations and other military facilities. In 1967, Casselberry annexed neighboring Plantation Keys. The economy of Casselberry has been primarily based on agriculture since the early 1900s when oil was first discovered in the area. Today, Casselberry is home to several small businesses as well as a large number of students at University of Miami-Dade College/Florida International University (FIU).
