Many families also took up residence in transient camps located around Jaxon during wartime activities such as building airfields or filling sandbags for defense against Japanese bombers passing overthe city on bombing raids nightfall (known then as "dark night"). As cotton prices plummeted during the Great Depression because of changes brought about by world conflict and new technologies like synthetic fibers technology which became available later that decade, some farmers decided to abandon growing crops altogether and begin using these new techniques to make money from synthetic fiber production instead. However many more people chose to stay behind because they could not find work elsewhere due to technological advances since World War II had ended with America being one of only a few countries without any military involvement internationally since European dominance had ended centuries earlier thanks to colonialism).
