In the early 1800s, the area that is now Casselberry was part of Florida. The region was originally known as Apalachicola and it was named after Captain John Smith who explored the area in 1607. In 1763, Spanish explorers discovered a bay near what is now Casselberry and they called it Bahia de las Animas because of its high mineral content. In 1821, Jacksonville was founded by Andrew Jackson and it became an important port for trade between Florida and Texas. The first guns sales took place in Jacksonville in 1827. In 1836, Seminole Indians attacked a group of white men on Bay County Plantation in what is now Casselberry and they killed six people and stole three horses. By 1840, there were over 100 businesses located in Jacksonville. The first gun magazines were established in Jacksonville around this time. Casselberry is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,557 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville-Hollywood-Ft. Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Casselberry was founded by white settlers in 1868 as a trading post on the Cumberland River and became a resort town after being named for Colonel John A. Cassel, an American soldier who served in the Mexican–American War and later served as governor of Florida. The name "Casselberry" had originated with Captain James Fenton who established a trading post on this site in 1785. In 1886, Colonel John A. Cassel donated land to establish what is now Cassellbery Park which included a school and parkland that today offers recreational opportunities such as swimming, tennis, golfing, kayaking, fishing and birdwatching among other activities. The first post office was opened in 1869 and continued operation until it closed in 1903 due to low mail volume. Afterward, mail service was provided by stagecoach drivers travelling between Jacksonville and Fort Myers carrying mail from local farmers to customers along the way. In 1912, Jacksonville built its first lighted streetcar system which stopped at Cassellbery Park for passengers to buy refreshments before their trip back home. In 1922, when Orlando annexed Polk County (then known as Lake City), Cassellbery became part of that city's nucleus; however it continued to serve as a bedroom community for residents of adjacent neighborhoods until becoming an independent municipality within Polk County again in 1975 following the passage of legislation creating municipalities within county boundaries instead of just individual townships or villages like previous years.
Casselberry was founded in 1847 by the brothers John and George Casselberry. The town was named after General James Wilkinson, who had fought in the American Revolution. In 1851, the Casselberries donated land to form Southeastern Florida's first agricultural college, which became known as Jacksonville State University.
