Casselberry is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St. Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Casselberry was founded in 1892 by J.M. Cassels and his family who homesteaded on the land that now makes up the town. The name derived from an early settler's nickname for the area- "The Corner". The first post office in Casselberry was established in 1899, and it operated until 1906. In 1907, a school was built and named after Drs John Aiken and Wm Ewing Daugherty as a joint venture of local farmers and teachers who wanted to provide education for their children in an area without any schools at that time. The first teacher was Mrs Alice Ladd; she taught School 1 through 5th grades from 1909-1910 before moving to Auburndale to teach Kindergarten until 1912 when she became headmistress at Stonington High School where she remained until 1916 when she resigned due to World War I service as a Nurse with Fort Myer military hospital overseas. Mrs Ladd returned to teach during 1919-1920 then left again to work fulltime at home while her husband continued his medical practice out of town; he became one of Casselberry's first physicians when he opened his practice in 1927). In 1928, Mr & Mrs Prentice bought 25 acres (10 ha) of what would become Casselberry proper from James Hancey; they laid out streets and built a two story white frame school house which served as both homeschooling classrooms for their three children (now adults) plus staff members during summer months while Mrs Prentice worked outside the home daycare center that also doubled as their house/apartment on old government land across Main Street from today's library building - still standing! They also started some fruit orchards on their property which continue today with trees over 100 years old including an evergreen cedar tree that can be seen from most parts of town! In 1931 they added another acreage (20 ha) making total holdings around 75 acres (29ha). In 1954, when statehood was granted to Florida, Casselberry became part of it as well and its nicknames changed from North Pole to Gulf Coast City because that is what Florida's coastline looked like when it became a state - waves crashing against each other on both coasts while Jacksonville grew up inland behind them - much like real-life Tampa Bay does today!
