Construction on what would become Casselberry began in 1917 when developer Harry Crouch bought 160 acres east of Interstate 95 and built what became known as "The Villages". The townsite had been surveyed by J.C. Penney & Co., developers of the nearby city of Fort Myers, but it wasn't until 1917 that work started on developing it into an incorporated town with its own government The first mayor of Casselberry was Wm Hanks and he held office from 1917 to 1928 In 1955-1956 Mayor Smedley Butler formed a referendum to annex portions of unincorporated Pinellas County which included much of today's casselberry area Ball State University moved from Muncie, Indiana to Orlando in 1949 so the university's main campus located adjacent to I-95 made room for new housing developments nears USF campus with no impact on students or staff

This name may be derived from "Kassels" (a type of cabbage), which means "Keeper's field." In 1892, Casselberry became an incorporated municipality with a population of seventy-six people. The first mayor was Wm. Hesseman Jr.; later mayors were Jno. Crouch (1924–29), Simeon Ligon (1930–34), Harry Daugherty (1945), Raymond Pugh (1949–51) and Edward Jaffe (1957). In 1932, A&P supermarket opened in Casselberry; it remains one of the town's most prominent local businesses to this day. The Post Office operated from 1907 until 1966 when it moved to nearby Cutlerstown due to lack of space on the original building downtown. Cassellery Boulevard is also home to several restaurants including Joe's Crab Shack & BBQ (), Blue Point Seafood (), Red Lobster (), Charlie Palmer's Pizza (), BJ's Pub () and Pizzeria Bianca (). There are also several residences located in close proximity such as First American Bank Tower () and USF Presidential University Campus (). One primary industry that has continued in Casselberry since its incorporation has been agriculture withatta production still taking place today at some point during each crop season for local consumption or export purposes
