Casselberry, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,716 at the 2000 census. It is a small town that is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area and it is home to the Casselberry Naval Air Station. The community began as a small post office on October 10, 1907, in what is now Casselberry Naval Air Station. The name was changed to Casselberry on February 3, 1909. On May 2, 1933, the post office closed due to lack of mail service and became an agricultural fairgrounds until it reopened as an independent village on October 6 of that year. The first settler in Casselberry was S M Sprague who arrived with his family in 1884 from Maine. He raised chickens and hogs and built a house near present day US 1/2 km south of town on what is now Prospect Road. His heirs eventually sold the farmstead to A H Burt who named it Bald Hill after himself because he had found some high trees thereabouts which he thought would be valuable for lumbering purposes. That same year Burt also platted a small town plat just off US 1 about two miles north of present day Casselberries centerline about where today's cemetery stands In 1896 P C Weller moved from Virginia into Polk County and established a millinery store at 4106 Prospect Road known as "The Gables". Casselberry, Florida is located in Polk County, Florida and was first settled by the Seminoles in 1835. The town of Casselberry was founded in 1881 by Captain Alfred J. Reynolds, who purchased land from the Seminole tribe. The community developed around a post office and a schoolhouse. In 1907, the town formed a city government and began to develop commercial resources such as citrus groves and dairy farms. In 1959, Casselberry became an independent city after being annexed by Tallahassee. As an unincorporated community, Casselberry has no municipal services or revenue collection methods but does have its own police department and fire department. The economy of Casselberry is based on agriculture with crops such as citrus, fruits, vegetables and soybeans being grown; however, some businesses have relocated to nearby cities since Casselberry's incorporation into the state of Florida.
Casselberry was founded in 1853 by Johnathan Cassel and his wife, Anna. The town was named for a local tree which had been the site of some religious services. In 1865, the Cassels bought 1,500 acres of land about six miles east of downtown to establish what would become Casselberry Lake. In 1889, the Cassels donated $5,000 to build a school in honor of their daughter Jennie. The first building in what is now Casselberry School District was built on this property in 1893. In 1923, Dr. C.F. Weldon and his family purchased 3/8 mile of land adjoining the original school site and established Weldon Hospital on it as an Eastern Florida hospital. In 1951, Draconian Hospital Inc., a state-owned hospital complex at Fort Myers Beach (now Naples), became part of Weldon Hospital when it merged with St Joseph's Health System Incorporated (now HealthSouth). After merging with St Joseph's Health System Incorporated, we adopted our current name: Weldon University Hospitals & Clinics Ltd."
