Casselberry, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 3,232 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. Casselberry was founded by Oleander and Anna Cassel in 1848 as a stage coach stop on the then new Spanish Trail. The first settler named Cassel was Anna's brother John who built a cabin on what is now US 206. There were two other cottages before the one that still stands today that served as home to the Cassels for over fifty years until they sold it in 1978 to Mr. and Mrs. Hickey who lived there until their death in 2003. On January 1, 1861, Confederate States Army forces under General John C Hood occupied Polk County while they moved southward to Montgomery County, Alabama. On February 25 of that year, General Hood ordered his men to burn all bridges and roads within Polk County except for one which he directed to be used as an escape route for prisoners left behind by Union forces retreating from Chattanooga during the Chattanooga Siege and Battle of Chickamauga Creek. Aftermath of this event included the displacement of many residents including Anna Cassel whose home became known as "The Hickey Cabin" because her husband Johnny Hickey had managed to get away with some military supplies including munitions enough to arm a small force against Sherman's army when it attacked them from positions near Lookout Mountain on July 20-21, 1863; also notable for being one of only three towns in America (along with Jacksonville and Mobile) not burned during President Abraham Lincoln's Executive Order called "The Showers". Anna Cassell died on October 12th 1942 at age 88 after a long battle with cancer; she is buried next door beside her husband Johnny at Good Shepherd Cemetery inCasselberry Village (now part of Clearwater). In 1948 Stonington Manufacturing Company went bankrupt due largely to competition by American Cyanamid Corporation becoming Coral Blue Incorporated which continued operations until 1984 when it merged into Grumman Aerospace Corporation forming what would become Grumman/FMC International Aircraft Industries 3000 which continued operation until 1998 when it merged into Boeing Co.,Inc.. Today Grumman/FMC International Aircraft Industries 3000 maintains manufacturing facilities located in Plantation & Belleair neighborhoods adjacent to Interstate 275 just outside Tampa Airport serving both civil and military customers worldwide through its wholly owned subsidiary Grumman Helicopters Corp.(www.grummanhelicopterscorpusa). At its height CASELBERRY employed more than 1000 individuals making parts for commercial airplanes including those manufactured at nearby Stonington Manufacturing Company between 1948-1984; prior thereto CASELBERRY made parts exclusively for United States Military aircraft manufacturers such as McDonnell Douglas Defense Department(wwwmeadanddavidson), Lockheed Martin Rand Corp.(wwwlangley), Northrop GrumMAN(wwwnorthropgruman)and Raytheon USA(wwwraytheonusa). CASELBERRY currently employs fewer than 100 individuals but continues make significant contributions to local economy through its involvement with several businesses such as Gadsden Airboat Rentals Inc., Casino del Sol Resort & Spa and Ponce de Leon University’s School of Business Administration where employees are currently involved in multiple aspects of curriculum development process leading up ta future business opportunities within various industries
