Cape Coral, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 154 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded on December 12, 1892 by J.D. Hearn and Wm. Fenton as Cape Coral Beach on Biscayne Bay.[1] In 1896, it became a city under the name of Jacksonville and was enlarged to its current size in 1912 with annexation of what is now south side of downtown Cape Coral from Fort Myers. On May 1, 1916, Jacksonville incorporation created a second city within its boundaries: Port Charlotte which included much of southeastern Fort Myers although that portion still forms part of Cape Coral today;[2] and then again on July 1st 1955 when Brevard County annexes east side of mainland capecoral from Pinellas County[3]. On January 3rd 1861 the first steps were taken to make this peninsula an upstanding community through passage in the State Legislature for a Townsite Land Grant to be offered for sale at $7 per acre (less than one tenthousandth penny). This gift from our Governor helped stimulate trade and settler activity as well as provide new homes for people who had come to populate this land since Indian Removal began less than three years earlier in 1835. That same year saw two other incorporations – Naples which includes much of eastern Fort Myers including Cummings Key until it was annexed by Cape Coral in 1915,[4] and Clearwater which only touches southern Fort Myers before becoming part of Cape Coral proper on December 12th 1892 following J D Hearn's purchase from A H Weisman’s heirs at $5 per acre In 1913 there were 536 residents living here according to Census figures while by 1920 there were 2200 residents living here according to UDT figures WhenDaddy opened his store just off Main Street in 1914 things started happening fast with businesses opening up all over town namesakes like “The Hotel Everglades” (later changed back to “Downtown”), “The Gables” (later changed back to “The Quality Inn”) soon followed by commercial districts such as The Strand Mall across FromPinellas Keys Boulevard into present day downtown where we are currently located As you can see Downtown has been home to some pretty unique businesses throughout its history including Yesterdays Meat Market(closed down 2016) & Liquorland operated by Tim Thomas since 1978
The first Europeans to visit Cape Coral were the Spanish in 1513. The area was part of the Captain Manuel de Serra's colony of Cuba and, as such, it was named for him. In 1853, Volney Griggs surveyed the cape and named it after Admiral Sir John C. Knox who had commanded British forces during the Crimean War. The town of Cape Coral began to form around this time with a small population of about 50 residents. It wasn't until 1907 that Cape Coral officially became a city.
