A total of twenty-four hurricanes have made landfall in mainland Florida duringHurricane Andrew'soodoo tour in 1992; thirteen were major hurricanes (category 5 or greater) and seven were category 2 or 3 storms. In 1845, the United States acquired Florida from Mexico and established the state of Florida. The city of Cape Coral was founded in 1851 by a group of English-born businessmen who located on an undeveloped tract of land near Fort Myers. By 1870, Cape Coral had become one of the most important ports on the Gulf Coast. In 1907, a hurricane destroyed much of Fort Myers and created a serious problem for Cape Coral because it would need to rebuild with new supplies and infrastructure. The city built a new fortification, which remains today one of its most impressive landmarks.
