By 1802, Fort Brooke had been built near what is now downtown Cape Coral and Captain James Cook sailed past Cape Coral Bay on his third voyage around South America on March 4, 1778 when he sighted land to the south but did not enter into an exploration because he thought it was another island. In 1821, a group of businessmen from Jacksonville organized a company to survey new land for colonization in what would become Broward County. They purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) along Clearwater River fromrations owner John Thornton for $1 per acre (0.40 ha). This tract became known as Flagler Beach because wealthy businessman Augustus De Witt Flagler bought alluvial soil there in 1827 for $4 per bushel (60 cents per pound). He donated alluvial soil to Broward County free of charge so that it could be used for agriculture instead of being turned into landfill or drilled for oil wells like most areas along Clearwater River then were! The county courthouse was built on Flagler Beach Road between Park Boulevard and Coconut Creek Parkway in 1896! As citrus culture grew popular throughout Central Florida during the early 20th century more people began moving into southern parts of the state such as Cape Coral which became increasingly residential due to its excellent climate conditions with mild winters year round and lush green vegetation year round! With growth came increased development including an addition to Fort Brooke called Bastrop Barracks which housed soldiers during World War I as well as later use as a training ground for law enforcement officers beginning with Sheriff Dwight Dyer There have also been many high profile events/incidents taking place here like Hurricane Irma’s path through town September 5-8 making landfall about 8 miles SWSE from downtown causing massive damage including some homes destroyed & over 60 properties damaged or looted! Today cape coral has seen rapid redevelopment with much new construction going up both inside & outside city limits; however some older neighborhoods are still subject to vandalism & crime problems

Cape Coral experienced rapid growth during its early years – reaching an estimated population of 100,000 by 1910 – but then began to experience decline beginning around 1970 as jobs disappeared in areas outside of town while other industries took hold withintown limits. However, recent efforts by city officials to revive downtown core have led to some success recently; including installation of a new fiber optic network that has revitalized several blocks along Commercial Street near Government House (the original courthouse).
