Cape Coral, Florida is a town located in Lee County, Florida. It was founded in 1891 and has been a municipality since 1907. The population was 10,688 as of the 2010 census. As of November 1, 2017 it had an estimated population of 11,812. The town's name comes from its location on Cape Coral Bay which forms the eastern border of the community. The first permanent settler in Cape Coral was James Dickey who arrived in 1891. He built a small cabin on the bay and named his settlement "Cape Coral." Ladd who bought 2,000 acres (0 hectare) of land east of Cape Coral in 1902 and Mgrs John Witherspoon and HUGH ALLISON who purchased 3,000 acres (1 hectare) east of Cape Coral in 1903. In 1907 Cape Coral became a municipality when it Split off from Fort Myers Township

The first European to visit the area now known as Cape Coral was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The area was part of Spanish Florida and was later claimed by the United States. The town of Fort Worth, Texas was founded in 1836 by Texas Rangers working for Santa Anna. After Mexico's victory at the Alamo, American forces burned Fort Worth in 1846. Cape Coral became a community when railroad workers built a station there in 1888. The townspeople donated land for a public school and parade ground in 1912. In 1956, Cape Coral organized its own city government and adopted an official name, Cape Coral/Fort Myers/Miami Beach-Downtown-Broadwalk (now Miami Dade County). In 1980, Hurricane Andrew destroyed parts of what is now downtown Cape Coral and killed more than 100 people. On September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks occurred near airport parking lots in Fort Lauderdale and Miami which left nearly 3 thousand people dead including several hundred children as well as many buildings flattened or damaged. Several reports suggest that terrorism may have been motive behind the destruction of the Twin Towers which were located just blocks from where much of downtown Cape Coral sits today
