Cape Canaveral is a small island located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about halfway between Spain and Portugal. The island was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1500s. In 1903, Cape Canaveral became one of the sites for the first American manned spaceflight when America's first human being, Neil Armstrong, became the first person to walk on the moon. The center of excitement at Cape Canaveral for many years was always launch launches from nearby Launch Complex 37 which had a long history of serving as both a launch site and testing ground for new rockets and aircraft. In 1969, two months after Apollo 11 went into orbit around Earth, United States president Lyndon B Johnson announced that Cape Canaveral would become home to America's next orbiting orbital mission - Project Mercury - with an attack vehicle called "Eagle" designed to land on Majestic Cloud Number Five and collect specimens from Jupiter's Great Red Spot. However, only three flights were made before Eagle crashed into Jupiter's atmosphere on July 16th, 1971. By this time however Project Mercury had been replaced by Apollo 13 which flew three times successfully beyond Earth orbit before crashing onto various planets including Mars on July 20th 1969! Since then there have been numerous other spaceflights including those commanded by NASA astronauts such as Michael Collins who became one of our most famous astronauts; John Glenn who orbited Earth multiple times; Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin who landed on Moon; Sally Ride who traveled to space aboard Discovery II; and Endeavour which served as NASA's mothership until she was retired in 2007. Today we continue to rely heavily upon launches from Cape Canaveral with some operations taking place out of Vandenberg AFB in California while others are conducted at KSC ( Kennedy Space Center) in Florida where we currently operate both Delta IV Heavy rockets and Falcon 9 vehicles!
