The Canaveral National Security Complex (CNSC) is a decommissioned United States Air Force facility in Cape Canaveral, Florida. It was used as a launch site for the Atlas-5 and Delta-6 launches of ballistic missiles during the Cold War. The complex also served as an air force installation until 2013, when it was turned over to the Department of Defense. The CNSC is located on Ellington Island near Launch Complex 41, which has been used for both Atlas-5 launches and Delta-4 launches since 1973. A total of sixteen launches took place at the CNSC from 1973 through 2003; ten were Atlas-5 missions, six were Delta-4 missions, and two were Pegasus III flights. Of particular note are three Pegasus III launches: In 2006, Canaveral became home to the first U.S.-China Friendship Games; in 2008, it hosted the Beijing Olympics; and in 2012 it launched NASA's Kepler spacecraft into orbit around Earth. In 2013, management of the complex passed from Air Force oversight to DoD control following the retirement of Gateway’s five launch vehicle manufacturers – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC), Lockheed Martin Company (LMT), Orbital ATK Inc., Space Exploration Technologies Co., Ltd., and Boeing Company (BA). As part of this transition process, DoD transferred responsibility for all Atlas 5/Delta 4 launches to NRO’s Sea Launch Service includingaunch operations at Ellington Island from LMT’s Vandenberg Air Force Base location.

The first commercial launch of a rocket from Cape Canaveral took place on July 14, 1959. The United States successfully launched the Mercury-Atlas 5 spacecraft from the launchpad on July 16. This was the first time that humans had traveled into space.

Beachey designed and built the first steamboat to travel upriver from Tampa Bay to Jacksonville, Florida. The boat was called "CSSAtlantis". In 1846, John C. Stennis became the first person to be born in space when he traveled aboard CSS Atlantis
