After King George's visit, settlers began using this site for launches from British warships out of Camden Harbour on St Johns Island until about 1800 when launches were relocated to Redstone Arsenal on Jupiter Island due to increasing concerns about American shipbuilding capabilities following Britain's victory in World War I. In 1905 a launch facility was built at Cocoa Beach Municipal Airport northeast of Cape Canaveral by Wernher von Braun and his team working with Germany'sRocketdyne company to develop space technology for future German warship design projects infrared astronomy research conducted by Ulysses S Grant during his presidency (1912-1916).
